PA PORTLAND — Portland Borough Council authorizes letters to businesses in response to recurring sewer contamination. After white substance was found in the treatment plant March 27, Council President Stephanie Steele and Councilmember Bruce Cialfi met with Craig LaBarre to review sewer ordinances, then voted unanimously to direct consultant Fitzpatrick, Lentz & Bubba to draft sampling-manhole letters to two businesses identified with prior chemical contamination; council members will draft letters to additional businesses. The council also approved wage increases for three borough employees—Borough Secretary Lori Sliker to $21 per hour, Billing Clerk Diann Eden to $18, and Maintenance Worker Fred Farleigh to $16—and hired Brian Labar as a part-time streets and maintenance worker at $17 per hour.
